More E-Learning Needed to Improve Sales Enablement Efforts

According to ASTD, companies spend $15 billion per year on sales training, an enormous number when you consider that people do not find sales training very effective. If organizations are spending this kind of money on largely ineffective training, there is a lot of value in figuring out ways to improve sales enablement efforts and provide them at a lower cost.

A recent article in the Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management suggests that sales training needs to be individualized, voluntary, and offered in various modes. The use of technology, including e-learning, should be a big part making that happen. Using Mindflash to create e-learning courses can help you improve your sales enablement efforts by providing training that is more self-directed, delivered at a lower cost, and sustainable in the sense that there are available resources that help sales professionals remember what they learned in training courses.

One major trend in enterprise learning and development is performance support. Performance support is about providing employees the information they need to do their jobs, when they need it.

Performance support is effective in solving two problems. First, with everything people need to know to do their jobs, there is very little chance that everything can be taught in a training class. Are You Keeping Your Participants Inside the Box?

Is there anything innovative about thinking outside the box? I don't think so. In fact, if you think outside the box, you are still thinking about the box. You might be outside the box, but standing right next to it.

How can we improve our processes, so we can get products to market faster?

Why is this not a good discussion question? Because it anchors any new ideas to "our processes." Most people will offer ideas in the context of existing processes. Not exactly, outside the box thinking.

How to Ask a Discussion Question

If we had market leading products that our customers loved, what would that look like?

It is a subtle difference, but by asking people to imagine the ideal, they will more likely be free to think about any and all ideas related to delivering awesome products to delighted customers, rather than on how they could improve product development processes.

As you write discussion questions for your learning designs, think about how you ask questions so that you don't keep your participants in the box.

Let's Review: Five Most Popular Posts in May 2013

Here are the top five posts on the LX Designer blog for the month of April. Since learning requires reflection, I thought we could reflect on what we learned from the most popular posts over the past month. 

In this post I talk about Social Presence Theory and share results of a study indicating a positive relationship between social presence and online instruction. The study also noted that social presence is not about frequency of participation. Social presence is about a social context, online communications, and interactivity. I believe LX designers should understand social presence when designing virtual and social learning in order to increase participation.

On-boarding new employees is a major undertaking for many organizations. In fact, for most training departments, on-boarding is most of what it does. A lot of money is invested in on-boarding new employees, but there are staggering statistics that show that all of this time, energy, and effort is largely wasted.

Microblogging allows for streams of information to be posted to groups in the context of a specific team or project, rather than posted for everyone to see. This allowed project teams to see only information related to what they are work on (if they choose). It also increases awareness of team members of tasks that are being worked on and what progress is being made.

I find this study an important step in discovering a way of working outside of email and share drives that make actually help work teams to work more efficiently together, especially remotely.

This topic is a departure from my normal musings. I ran the Colfax Half Marathon on May 19, and the race was a big focus for me in May. So I wrote about it. In this post, a share some of the wildlife I see on my trail runs. 

If you asked me 12 months ago whether I would ever go for a run when the temperature is below zero, you would have said, "Heck, no!" I have learned to enjoy winter runs, but this day was ridiculous.
